Schools In Alaska – Accredited

Alaska is both the northernmost and least densely populated U.S. State.  It is also the state with among the highest percentage of in-state students attending the colleges and universities within its borders.  Alaska is home to 5 community colleges, including Ilisagvik College, a tribal institution. The other four are Kodiak College, Kenai Peninsula College (the only multi-campus college of the five), Matanuska-Susitna College, and Prince William Sound Community College.

Alaska’s single for-profit institution, Charter College, offers undergraduate and graduate programs on campuses in Anchorage and Wasilla, as well as online bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs.

The Alaska University System includes University of Alaska campuses in Anchorage and Fairbanks, and University of Alaska Southeast, with campuses in Juneau, Ketchikan, and Sitka.  The Fairbanks campus serves close to 14,000 students, about half of the system wide total. A little over 90% of students are in-state residents, with about 2,600 pursuing graduate or professional school degrees.  Next in enrollment is the Fairbanks campus, with about 8,600 enrollees.

Student interested in religious vocations have two choices, Alaska Bible College, the smallest college in the state with only 50 students, and Saint Herman’s Orthodox Theological Seminary, also an extremely small institution.  Alaska is one of only a dozen states without a Catholic college or university.

Alaska Pacific University, located in Anchorage, is the single traditional private college in the state, as well as the most distinctive institution in the state. The 700 student university combines traditional liberal arts and business degree offerings with environmental, outdoor, and experiential based education programs at both the undergraduate and master’s degree levels.

Online Colleges In Alaska

There are currently seven colleges and universities in Alaska that offer online degree programs. Many of them offer hybrid programs, programs that combine on-campus and online education, or programs comprised of online coursework only. Some offer both. The institutions in question are Alaska Pacific University, Charter Online College, Ilisagvik College, Prince William Sound College, University of Alaska Anchorage, University of Alaska Fairbanks, and University of Alaska Southeast.

With an area of 663,000 square miles, Alaska is the largest (greatest land mass) U.S. state. It is also the most sparsely populated. What that means is that it is impossible to cover the state well enough with campus-based programs to offer higher education access to many state residents, especially those living in small, remote communities. That’s why so many Alaska institutions offer coursework and/or degrees via online educational programs, and why so many Alaska residents are grateful for the opportunities online education can give them.

In many ways, the Alaskan economy is tied pretty closely to the national economy, thus the most popular online degrees in Alaska are pretty much the same as in other states; business, computer science, nursing, technology, allied health professions, and education. Online programs are added, and are well enrolled, when their graduates are in high demand and/or are predicted to be in high demand in the upcoming years.

In other ways, however, Alaska is significantly different than most states in that it has a huge coastline and a booming, diverse energy producing industry. Therefore, at least for the foreseeable future, degree programs in areas related to energy, mining, marine science, geology, and engineering are likely to enroll a significant number of students, including adults wishing to improve their career and employment options.

Because of an aging population, medical and healthcare professionals are in high demand, with especially high needs for pharmacists, and mental health professionals.

Currently there are nearly fifteen thousand Alaskans enrolled in online bachelor’s degree programs, online master’s degree programs, online doctoral programs, certificate programs, and individual courses. Those in degree programs pay as much as $30,000 to a low of just $4,000 per academic year. On average, full time degree-seeking online students pay about $10,000. As financial aid is available to online students, many have out-of-pocket expenses significantly lower
