Delaware, one of the original 13 United States colonies, is smaller than every state but one, and has a population of under a million people, making it one of the least populous U.S. states. Therefore, not surprisingly, Delaware has just 10 colleges and universities within its borders, ten public and ten private. However, don’t assume that students have severely limited options.

Delaware participates in a program which allows students to pay in-state tuition in 15 states if they are enrolled in degree programs not available in Delaware. Under the direction of the Southern Regional Education Board, the program is commonly called “the academic common market”.

The University of Delaware, with its main campus in Newark, and smaller campuses in Wilmington, Lewes, Georgetown, and Dover, is the largest educational institution in the state. The university awards associate degree programs (4), bachelor’s degree programs (115), and doctoral degree programs in more than 40 doctoral programs. The university also offers seven online masters degrees (cybersecurity, electrical and computer engineering, teacher leadership, and public administration).

Delaware State University, is one of the 110 historically black college (HBCU) in the nation. The university offers 53 bachelor’s degree programs, 25 master’s degree programs, and 5 doctoral programs. Among the more unusual areas in which students may study are aviation management, professional pilot training, consumer science, forensic science, historic preservation, and molecular and cellular neuroscience.

Wilmington University, with a generous admissions policy that offers a place to almost 98% of all undergraduate applicants, enrolls nearly 15,000 students in associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees. The university offers a wide range of online courses and online degree programs.

Delaware College of Art and Design is a two-year institution from which most graduates transfer to institutions offering bachelor of fine arts degree programs.

Online Colleges In Delaware

Small in size, Delaware likewise has very limited online degree options. Of the schools in the state that offer online degrees, two of them are private and one is public. The University of Delaware, the state’s flagship institution, is one of the primary providers of online education in the state. However, there are few students taking advantage of what UD and the other institutions that offer online degree programs offer. According to a 2012 report by the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics, under 7% of the students enrolled in Title IV schools in Delaware were taking fully online courses. While that number is likely to have increased in the past few years, it is unlikely to have caught up to many of the state’s neighbors, and is far below some of the states in the nation that exceed 20% for the same statistic. However, the programs that are offered through the various online programs in the state do provide some quality education and viable options.

The University of Delaware has several nationally ranked programs through its online system. The U.S News and World Report ranks the school’s online MBA program at #101 among its competitors, and its graduate Nursing program at #25. The school also offers other programs that may interest prospective students. These include Master’s degrees in Teacher Leadership, Social Studies in World History, Economics and Entrepreneurship for Educators and Cybersecurity. The majority of the school’s programs are Master’s degree level. There is also one Associate’s degree program available in Arts and two certificate programs, to include Clinical Trials Management and Business essentials.

Wilmington University and Widener University-Delaware Campus both offer online degrees and certificates as well. Wilmington University, a private institution, offers these programs at the lowest cost of any of the state’s other colleges. At under $10,000, the university provides a variety of fully-online degree programs that may interest prospective students in Delaware. Indeed, Wilmington University offers the most variety of any school in the state, with over 90 degree and certificate programs available online, including undergraduate and graduate degrees. Students can explore Bachelor’s degree programs in Communication, Cyber Security, Education, Human Resource Management, Marketing, Psychology and many others. Graduate degrees are available in several fields, including ESOL Literacy and Homeland Security. There are also a good variety of certificate programs, including those in fields such as Digital Evidence Discovery and Digital Evidence Investigation.

Widener University-Delaware Campus, like the University of Delaware, has a somewhat smaller set of program options. The college currently provides eight fully-online Bachelor’s degree programs in Allied Health, Criminal Justice, English, Liberal Studies, Organizational Development and Leadership, Professional and Applied Studies, Psychology, and General Studies. The school also offers these programs at a higher cost than the other two.

Prospective students will be happy to know that most colleges in the state offer their education at tuition costs that are lower than the national average, and report post-graduation salaries for their graduates that are above the national average. Ten years out, graduates of Wilmington University, The University of Delaware and Widener University-Delaware Campus all enjoy salaries above $40,000 a year, with with the University of Delaware’s students enjoying on average more than $54,000 a year.
