Traditional Schools in Kansas
Although the United States Midwest is our nation’s breadbasket, many assume that this section of the country feeds only the body, not the mind. But the Midwest is home to many top colleges and universities that provide a wide range of different degree programs. Kansas is just one of many states that maintain a very active post-secondary educational atmosphere, with over 20 public and private colleges and universities. The State’s flagship institution does not offer, as people might expect, a major in agriculture, but it offers many other excellent, rigorous programs at the undergraduate, Master’s, and Doctoral levels, including one of the nation’s top-ranked engineering programs.
Although Kansas has what some may consider a relatively small number of state universities (of which there are six: Emporia State University, Fort Hays State University, Kansas State University, Pittsburg State University, University of Kansas, Wichita State University), two of these institutions take the #1 and #2 positions among the state’s best schools. The University of Kansas and Kansas State University are big names, not only in the state, but in the country as well for their advanced and undergraduate degree programs and dedication to providing rigorous education to students. All of this is provided at a fraction of the cost of what one might get at a private college or institution.
Kansas is also home to many opportunities for those who desire an earlier, smaller or alternative form of post-secondary education. There are 19 community colleges stretched across the state, and several technical and vocational schools throughout, including the much renowned American Institute of Baking, a baking school that enjoys nearly a century-long history in baking sciences. Although the state is small in regards to population, it is large in its development of varied and unique educational programs, schools and most importantly, opportunities for both in-state and out-of-state students.

Online Colleges and Degree Programs In Kansas
The online college atmosphere in Kansas is vast and growing every year. Currently, there are over 50 different accredited, degree-granting institutions within the state. Many of these programs can be found in the public, state institutions, while the majority of them are found in the many private colleges, universities, community colleges and technical and vocational schools found within the state. Of the accredited schools that offer online degree programs within the state, the top 6 most affordable are: Washburn University, Fort Hays State University, Wichita State University, Manhattan Christian College, Emporia State University and Pittsburgh State University. Five of these 6 most affordable schools with online programs are part of the state’s public university system. This shows Kansas’ emphasis on providing educational opportunities for a wide range of students.
Many Kansas institutions focuses heavily on what is called a 2+2 program. This program allows students to take 2 years of their education at one of the state’s many community colleges, and then take the final 2 years of their educational program at one of the state’s colleges of universities, without having to attend the university physically. That way, location-bound students who attend a community college in one part of the state are not forced to relocate to another part of the state in order to attend a college or university that has the degree program that they seek.
Many of these online degree programs are also nationally ranked, and use many new and popular learning management systems to facilitate in the learning process. Fort Hays State University comes in at #16 on the U.S. News and World Report’s rankings of the Best Online Bachelor’s Programs.
