Schools In Massachusetts

Like most Northeastern states, Massachusetts is an educational powerhouse. Home to over 100 public and private colleges and universities, the state also boasts some of the oldest and most renowned institutions in the country. The Bay State offers an extremely wide variety of educational options for prospective students, and many excellent degree programs spanning Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral degrees. Prospective students who like to live and learn in a historical atmosphere will love most colleges in the state. Those who enjoy cool summers and cold winters will be fond of the weather they find in the state as well.

Massachusetts is home to some of the biggest and most recognizable names in the educational scene: The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Smith College, Harvard University, Brandeis University and Amherst College. Understandably, the renown of many of these colleges, and the fact that most of the top colleges in the state are private institutions, also means that these colleges and universities are highly selective and come with very high costs. However, most schools within the state, and especially the top schools, possess very significant endowments. Schools such as Harvard and MIT offer sizable scholarship awards to lower income students who are accepted, and most students accepted received some form of scholarships and grants in order to attend.

Students who graduate from Massachusetts colleges and universities command some of the highest salaries among college graduates across the county. For 25 of the schools in the states, graduates average $50,000 or more in annual salary. According to the U.S. Department of Education, the median salary after 10 years past graduation for students who received some form of federal financial aid was just over $34,000. Those interested in schools in Massachusetts should note that it is not only the top schools that have above-average tuition costs. Most schools in the state are above or well above average for tuition. Massachusetts has 14 state-run colleges and universities, all of which offer the best value for the lowest overall tuition costs.

Online Degrees and Programs in Massachusetts

The University of Massachusetts is one of the largest public institutions to provide completely online degrees. The University of Massachusetts system, which has 5 campuses across the state, also offers the online degree option for individuals with families or for whom physical attendance is a burden or an impossibility. UMassOnline offers more online degree programs than almost every other public institution in the country, with Bachelor’s degrees, Master’s degrees and certificates available for almost every degree program that prospective students could take in person. Likewise, students taking the degree programs online will pay the same tuition rates as those who attend in person, at around $7,000 annually.

Outside of UMassOnline, those wishing to take online degrees will find the state’s online degree program offerings varied and full. There are over 80 colleges and universities in the state that offer some form of online education, most of which offer Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees to students who are place bound. The most affordable of these are Salem State University (tuition: $910), Westfield State University (tuition: $1,450), National Graduate School of Quality Management (tuition: $6,992), Fitchburg State University (tuition: $7,032), and Nichols College (tuition: $7,200). Westfield State University ranks in the top 100 for U.S. News and World Report’s Best Online Bachelor’s programs. The University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth (which

is #6 on the list of most affordable programs in the state), also comes in the top 100 on the U.S. News and World Report’s list, as well as #69 for Best Online Programs.

Massachusetts may be big on traditional education, but prospective students will find that their online offerings are ranked among the best in the nation. Those wishing to find a great online degree program for a good value will find Massachusetts to be one of the best options to explore.
