New Mexico Schools – Overview

New Mexico, with just 2,085,538 people, is one of the lowest and most sparsely populated states in the United States. The land of enchantment, as it is called, has a very diverse population, with a higher percentage of people of Hispanic origin than any other state, and the second highest percentage of Native Americans, behind only Alaska.

The Institute of American Indian Arts, as its name suggests, is a four-year institution focused on the arts of Native Americans (as well as programs in education, museum studies, and specialized liberal arts). The Institute, located in the art-rich city of Santa Fe, is the only United States college or university of its kind.

Other public-supported four-year institutions in New Mexico include Eastern New Mexico University (a 3 campus university), New Mexico Highlands University, New Mexico State University (with 3 campuses), Northern New Mexico College, Western New Mexico University, and the five-campus University of New Mexico. In addition to four-year and graduate degree programs, the University of New Mexico, New Mexico State, and Eastern New Mexico University offer two-year degree programs.

Specialty institutions in the state include New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology and New Mexico Military Institute, which offers high school and two-year college degrees, and Navajo Technical University, a tribal-managed institution with about 1,800 students studying on its New Mexico and Arizona campuses.

New Mexico is home to seven community colleges; Central New Mexico Community College, Clovis Community College, Mesalands Community College, New Mexico Junior College, San Juan College, Santa Fe Community College, and Luna Community College.

Private institutions offering degrees in the fine arts include Southwest University of Visual Arts and Santa Fe University of Art and Design. There are three for-profit private colleges in the state, all multi campus institutions; Carrington College, ITT Tech, and the University of Phoenix. Both ITT and University of Phoenix offer online degrees in addition to on-campus study. Non-profit privates in New Mexico include University of the Southwest, a small, Christian college and St. John’s College, which utilizes a unique “great books” curriculum.

New Mexico is one of only approximately a dozen states which does not host a Catholic college or university.

Online Degrees and Programs – New Mexico

Although New Mexico lags behind several other Western states in the online degrees and programs that it offers, some of this can be attributed to the relatively small number of colleges that actually exist in the state. According to a 2012 National Council for Education Statistics report, only 12.9% of New Mexico’s students enrolled in Title IV postsecondary schools were enrolled in fully online programs. However small, this number is indeed growing, and is not too far behind most states in the country.

Due to the relatively low cost of education across the state, most of the state’s affordable online degree programs can be found at the public universities. Eastern New Mexico University offers the best value with an annual tuition ~$5,000. This is followed by the University of New Mexico (annual tuition: ~$5,500), Western New Mexico University (annual tuition: ~$6,000), New Mexico State University (annual tuition: ~$7,000) and the University of the Southwest (annual tuition: ~$9,500). Among these, only the University of the Southwest is a private institution. In all, there are 36 accredited colleges that provide some form of online degrees. Most of the available programs are Associate’s degrees offered at the community colleges and Master’s degrees at the other colleges and universities.

There is no organized body covering online degrees in New Mexico as can be found in many other states. Every college provides its own level of online degree programs. Prospective students will find that the best ranked programs can be found at Western New Mexico University, Eastern New Mexico University, New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, University of New Mexico and the University of the Southwest. St. John’s College bottoms out the list of top 6, but does not offer programs at a rate less expensive than its general tuition rate of around $45,000 a year.

The top ranked school in the state for online degrees, Western New Mexico University, offers graduate degrees in Business Administration, Education, Educational Leadership, Interdisciplinary Studies, Occupational Therapy, Reading and Social Work. They also offer nine undergraduate degrees in similar areas, as well as three Associate’s degrees in Criminal Justice, Human Services and Liberal studies.
