Virginia’s Schools – Overviews & Educational Evaluations

The Old Dominion, as Virginia is sometimes known, is the oldest of the original 13 United States colonies. It is a state which is exceptionally rich in educational history. William and Mary University, which many people think has the prettiest campus in the nation, was founded in 1693. The University of Virginia, regarded as a top- flight university with a prestigious law school, was founded by President Thomas Jefferson. Most Virginia colleges are accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). Virginia is the home of three HBCU’s (historically black colleges and universities); Hampton University, Norfolk State University, and St. Paul’s College.

Virginia Tech University, another notable institution, recently opened a new medical school.

Online Colleges In Virginia

Virginia is undoubtedly one of the best places in the country to earn a postsecondary degree. Both traditional and online degree options are extensive and well-ranked. Indeed, many of the highly-lauded traditional schools in the state offer online degree programs. Some of these schools have been offering online degrees longer than most other colleges in the country as well. As a large state, Virginia is home to an equally large number of colleges as well. In all, there are 49 colleges, universities and community colleges that are fully accredited (either regionally or nationally) that offer distance learning opportunities for prospective students.

Virginia’s colleges and universities offer a wide range of both public and private options, as well as a very wide range of low to high tuition rates. Most in-state students will pay relatively low tuition rates, although several of the state’s public institutions have higher tuition rates due to their relative popularity and ranking. The University of Virginia, for example, has an in-state tuition rate of around $14,500 and an out-of-state tuition rate around $44,000. Many of the state’s lower-tier public institutions have tuition rates that are well below the national average. Schools such as Virginia State University (~$8,000 in-state), and the University of Mary Washington (~$11,000 in-state) offer degree programs at a lower cost.

As a state, Virginia is very welcoming for distance learners. According to a 2012 National Center for Education Statistics report, over 18% of the state’s students enrolled in Title IV institutions were taking their degree programs completely online. This places Virginia among the top states in the nation for online learners at the secondary level. Opportunities abound at many of the state’s public and private universities. Some of the best options available for prospective students can be found at Liberty University, George Mason University, James Madison University, Old Dominion University and Regent University.

Liberty University, an extremely large private institution in the state, has some of the most extensive online offerings within the state. This religiously Christian university offers many degree programs for those seeking religious study and those seeking degrees outside of religious fields as well. There are over 50 Bachelor’s degree programs offered through the institutions, including degrees in many unique areas, such as Aviation Maintenance Management, Green and Sustainable Management, Strategic Intelligence, National Security, Gaming Design, Paralegal Studies, Military Resilience, and Life Coaching. Over 50 Master’s degrees are attainable as well, in such areas as Homiletics, Church History, Middle East Affairs, Campaigns and Elections, Crisis Response and Trauma (Pastoral Counseling), Digital Marketing and Advertising and Sports Marketing and Media. A small handful of Doctoral degrees are available, primarily in Business and Education.

Many of the other universities and colleges in the state offer online degrees that are well ranked by the U.S. News and World Report. George Mason University has well ranked programs: #36 for Best Online MBA Programs and #148 for Best Online Graduate Education Programs. James Madison University ranks at #12 for Best Online MBA Programs and #148 for Best Online Education Programs. Old Dominion University ranks well at #31 for Best Online Bachelor’s Programs, #42 for Best Online Graduate Education Programs and #39 for Best Online Graduate Nursing Programs.
