Michigan Schools List

Michigan, The Great Lakes State, is unequivocally a popular location for prospective students. Some of the biggest and most well-known educational powerhouses call this state home. While several of the state’s colleges are more widely known for their success in sports, there are many schools in the state that are extremely successful in more academic endeavors. The state is home to just under 100 colleges and universities, a testament not only to the state’s rather large population (just under 10 million people), but also the overall educational focus that exists across the state from the K-12 level and on up to the post-secondary level.

In their 2015 rankings of states with the best high schools, Michigan comes in at a very solid position: 29. Despite not existing at the very top of the list, Michigan is far from the worst, and indeed has a lot of boast about in its educational programs and offerings across all possible educational levels.

Despite having a relatively small number of public universities in comparison to the large number of private colleges and universities in the state, Michigan’s public university scene is extremely well respected. Several of the schools are highly ranked on a national level, with most ranked well regionally. The 15 public universities in the state are: Central Michigan University, Eastern Michigan University, Perris State University, Grand Valley State University, Lake Superior State University, Michigan State University, Michigan Technological University, Northern Michigan University, Oakland University, Saginaw Valley State University, University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, University of Michigan-Dearborn, University of Michigan-Flint, Wayne State University and Western Michigan University. Of these, three are ranked nationally among the top 200 national universities: University of Michigan-Ann Arbor (#29), Western Michigan University (#187), Michigan Technological University (#123), Michigan State University (#75), and Central Michigan University (#194).

The private colleges and universities that exist in the state make up the vast majority of post-secondary offerings. Prospective students have a wide array of options on this end, many of which are equally ranked both nationally and regionally. While the two best ranked colleges in the state are public universities (University of Michigan-Ann Arbor and Michigan State University), among the top are: Albion College, Calvin College, and Kalamazoo College. All 3 of these are in the top 200 for national liberal arts colleges and universities in the country. Several other private institutions in the state are also nationally and regionally ranked, including Hillsdale College (#67 for liberal arts colleges), Madonna University (#98 for regional universities), and University of Detroit Mercy (#23 among Midwestern universities).

Prospective students looking at schools in Michigan will find that most of the state’s public universities annual tuition rates are either at or below the national average. Likewise, most of the state’s private colleges and universities are at or around the same rate, making Michigan’s schools, both public and private, among the best deals that students can find. Michigan is also home to many alternative and preliminary forms of post-secondary education. The state has a high number of community colleges, several art schools, and many technical schools. ITT Technical Institute has at least 5 locations across the state. There are also a few art schools, such as the Art Institute of Michigan and the Compass College of Cinematic Arts. For those seeking religiously focused study, the state is home to several Christian and Jewish schools, as well as one Islamic studies university (Islamic American University). As noted, the state has many options for students who are seeking different opportunities, making Michigan one of the best states for students looking into all forms of educational experiences.
