Ohio’s Schools, An Overview

Ohio’s state motto, “With God, all things are possible,” is fitting for the variety of schools in the state. Prospective students interested in Ohio will be pleased to know the state has an interesting mixture of nature settings. The state itself could be considered one of the gateways to the Midwest. Nestled nicely between West and Indiana, the state offers bucolic mountain settings in the east, as well as very flat, fertile farmland in the west. As one of the oldest Midwestern states in the country, Ohio has a lot to offer for students interested in anything from farming to engineering. Collectively, the state has a wide range of public and private colleges, as well as an above-average number of religiously based schools.

There are 13 public institutions in Ohio’s public university system. Many of these have above-average enrollment numbers, and several of them ranked well both nationally and regionally. The schools in the public university system are The University of Akron, Bowling Green State University, Central State University (an HBCU), University of Cincinnati, Kent State University, Miami University, The Ohio State University, Ohio University, Shawnee State University, University of Toledo, Wright State University and Youngstown State University. Among these, three of the schools are ranked in the top 200 national universities by U.S. News and World Report’s annual listing. Bowling Green State University is ranked within the top 200 universities in the nation, at #185. Kent State University also ranks nationally at #175 among national universities. The University of Cincinnati is the highest ranked among these, at #140. The University of Cincinnati is the oldest among these. Established in 1819, it has a $1.2 billion endowment, over 40,000 students and many unique and top-ranked programs, including those in Industrial Design and Musical Theatre.

The private colleges in Ohio are also among the highest ranked in the state, with several that count themselves among the best colleges in the county. Five of these fall under a consortium called “The Five Colleges of Ohio Consortium”. These schools, Denison University, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University and the College of Wooster. Each of these colleges are among the oldest in the state, having been founded between 1824 (Kenyon College) and 1866 (College of Wooster). All of these schools are ranked nationally. Denison University is ranked at #55 among national liberal arts colleges. Kenyon College is ranked higher, at #25 in the same category. Oberlin College slightly beats out Kenyon College at #23. The College of Wooster bottoms out the list of these, at #61. The placement of each of these schools in the top 100 for national liberal arts colleges, and 4 out of 5 of them in the top 50, indicates the strong educational connection and history within the state.

The majority of the state’s private institutions are religiously affiliated. The private religious institutions cover a wide range of beliefs. These include Baptist (three schools), Nondenominational Christian (18 schools), Jewish (two schools), Lutheran (two schools), Mennonite (one school), Methodist (five schools), Presbyterian (two schools), Quaker (two schools), Catholic (13 schools) and the United Church of Christ (two schools). Those interested in taking educational programs at a religiously-based institution will indeed find that Ohio has more than almost every other state in the country, many of which are top-ranked regionally and nationally. The University of Dayton, the largest Catholic-affiliated school in the state, holds a reasonable ranking at #108 among national universities. John Carroll University, another Catholic-affiliated school, holds high at #7 among regional universities (Midwest). The two Quaker-affiliated schools, Malone University and Wilmington College are each in the top 100 for regional colleges, at #61 and #54 respectively.

Online Degrees and Programs in Ohio

There are many different accredited colleges and universities offering online programs in Ohio. The Ohio University system offers students the ability to take courses online, despite which Ohio University school that they attend. This program, called Program Share, was implemented in 2011. The Ohio University eCampus has many various programs that are offered to students through a comprehensive online format. There are seven Bachelor’s degree programs available, to include Applied Communication, Applied Management, Criminal Justice, Customer Service, Resident Nursing, Technical and Applied Studies and Technical Operations Management. Six Master’s degree programs are available as well, including one in Engineering and Technology. Students also have five Associate degrees available in the eCampus, all fully online.

Over 150 colleges in the state offer online degree or certificate programs of some sort. Because most of Ohio’s schools have tuition rates are at or above the national average, students can expect to pay more for their online education here than they may pay in many other locations across the country. The least inexpensive programs in the state can be located at Ohio University (annual tuition ~$6,000), Youngstown State University (annual tuition ~$6,250), University of Northwestern Ohio (annual tuition ~$6,400), Bowling Green State University (annual tuition ~$9,000) and Cleveland State University (annual tuition ~$9,600). Because the majority of these schools are public institutions, students should expect that they cannot take courses on a per-credit basis. Full enrollment in a 2-year or 4-year degree is necessary for most of the schools.

Prospective students will find that the top ranked programs can be found at Tiffin University, Ohio University, God’s Bible School and College, Cleveland State University, Kettering College and Kent State University. Tiffin University boasts relatively impressive rankings. The U.S. News and World Report places the school at #68 among regional universities. The school offers a wide range of online degrees, ranging from Associate’s degrees to Master’s degrees. Degree programs can be located across many different fields, including in Criminology, Corrections, Accounting, Finance, Homeland Security, Information Technology, Sport and Fitness Administration and many others. As a private institution, students can expect to pay higher-than-average tuition rates, at around $25,000 a year. Tiffin has a relatively low acceptance rate (under 40%), but boasts of above-average post-graduation salaries, at just under $40,000 a year.
