Online Colleges in West Virginia

Mountainous and mostly rural, West Virginia is a relatively large state with a comparatively small population. In a state where people enjoy privacy and seclusion, finding online degree programs should certainly be an easy task. Prospective students will find that, although there are few colleges in the state, those that do call the state home tend to offer online degree programs and classes of some sort. In total, there are 30 accredited degree programs that can be found across the state. However, prospective students will find that the best programs that can be found can be obtained from the public universities in the state. Offering a wide range of programs at a relatively low cost, West Virginia University at Petersburg, West Liberty University, Marshall University and West Virginia University (main campus) each offer degree programs and certificate programs for those students seeking to take their learning experience online.

Prospective students looking to take their courses fully online from West Virginia’s schools will find that the in-state tuition rates and per-credit course rates are among the least expensive in the nation. West Virginia University, which offers courses for under $6,000 a year, also offers them at a per-credit cost of under $250. Students will find several certificate programs available from the school, such as Early Childhood Development, and several undergraduate degrees, such as Nursing and a Regents Bachelor of Arts degree. The school specializes more in graduate degrees, offering prospective students degrees through highly ranked online graduate degree programs. The U.S. News and World Report has ranked the school #25 for Best Online MBA Programs, #36 for Best Online Graduate Nursing Programs and #86 for Best Online Graduate Education Programs. Students will also find graduate degrees in Integrated Marketing Communications, Instructional Design and Technology and Educational Leadership: Higher Education Administration.

Outside of the public colleges and universities in the state, several of the public institutions also offer online degree programs. Wheeling Jesuit University provides students degrees utilizing the industry-standard Blackboard learning management system. At under $7,500 a year for annual tuition and a per-credit cost of $300, students will find that the schools limited options are inexpensive but rigorous. The U.S. News and World Report identifies the school’s programs favorably, rating it #125 for Best Online Bachelor’s Programs, #68 for Best Online Graduate Education Programs and #40 for Best Online Graduate Nursing Programs. Prospective students will find Education Leadership, Organizational Leadership and Nursing available through the school.

West Virginia is by far one of the friendliest states for taking online degree programs, and is indeed one of the few states that can boasts over 20% of their Title IV students taking online degree programs. Indeed, a 2012 NCES study found that 40% of their students enrolled in Title IV institutions were taking fully online degree programs. At the time, this amounted to over 60,000 students, a number that has undoubtedly grown in the past several years.
