Five Top New York Colleges

While America’s first university was Harvard, founded in 1636, the state of New York’s first university was Columbia University, which opened its doors in 1754. Now, the state has well over a thousand accredited four-year colleges and universities, in addition to all of its community colleges.

New York residents and those who would like to enter the state for higher education can choose to study in urban centers, fertile valleys, or foothills. Here’s a look at 5 notable colleges in New York.

1. Cornell University

Ithaca is a hamlet at the mouth of Cayuga Lake, Southwest of Syracuse. It is home to Cornell, an Ivy League University with an enrollment of 21,850. Cornell’s campus is dotted with lovely buildings in a neoclassical or Gothic style, such as Sage Chapel, in which the school’s founders are buried.

As an Ivy League member, Cornell has a great reputation and great academic credentials. It has both very reputable graduate and undergraduate programs. While a Cornell degree in any field will look good on any resume, some of the university’s most-celebrated programs are its graduate programs in engineering and in physics, as well as its various undergraduate business majors, included the Dyson BS Degree in Applied Economics and Management. Another touted program is Creative Writing, which offers and undergraduate concentration and an MFA program.

Cornell boasts a student to faculty ratio of just 8:1, and more than half of its classes have enrollments lower than 20. Its admissions standards are, not surprisingly, in the U.S. New and World Report category of “most selective.”

As one might guess, Cornell has no shortage of accomplished alumni, including Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Other distinguished alumni include Bill Nye (“the Science Guy”), Toni Morrison, and Pearl Buck. Cornell counts among its alumni dozens of senators, congressmen, and CEO’s.

2. Bard College

Located in the rural setting of Annandale on Hudson, Bard has a small enrollment of 2,059. It provides a setting for nature-loving contemplative students, with plenty of hiking nearby, and no Greek system. Sitting by a creek reading poetry seems more the speed of Bard students than partying in a sorority house.

Indeed, a student with interests in the arts and humanities will certainly feel at home at Bard. A large percentage of the students choose to major in fields such as English, Philosophy, Religious Studies, and Foreign Languages.

Bard’s website says that the school thinks of liberal arts as “the hub of a network.” The Bard Network allows students to study in networked locations such as Bard College Berlin, Budapest, and other locations outside of New York.

Bard College also sports a Center for Civic Engagement, with various initiatives such as Sounds of Social Change and others that reach out to under-served populations in various ways.

Notable Bard alumni include journalist Matt Taibbi, actor Jonah Hill, and actor Chevy Chase.

3. SUNY, Buffalo

The State University of New York, Buffalo is now called “the University at Buffalo.” It is located in…guess what city…and has an enrollment of 19,829. This means that it’s not a tight-knit campus and offers something more eclectic than the small, liberal arts experience. Sixty-five percent of students live in off-campus housing, which indicates that the lifestyle of a student is somewhat independent, integrated into Buffalo town life.

To further illustrate this, only 4% of students are members of Greek organizations, so if you’re looking for a school to forge your own social path, this one may very much be for you.

Academically, one of the unique traits of Buffalo is a program called the Finish in 4 Pledge which offers a customized plan for students to get their degree in four years. This program is meant not just to encourage a fast completion of academic work but to provide students with the resources to complete an appropriate and successful course of study. Due to this program, The New America Foundation recognized UB as a “model for national reform.” One of the things that makes Finish in 4 so appealing is that it guarantees that if the student follows a designed plan and still does not graduate in four years, he or she will be able to take necessary remaining classes for free.

The faculty at Buffalo boast no less than four Nobel Prize winners.

The most popular majors, by percentage of students enrolled are Business, Management, Marketing, and Related Support Services, and Social Sciences.

In 2014, Buffalo accepted 57% of applicants.

4. New York University

NYU, as it is usually known, has a tradition stretching back to 1831. Its enrollment is a whopping 58, 547. Not surprisingly, it’s also one of the biggest employers in New York City. It caters to students who want to be in the middle of it all.

The student body at NYU is racially diverse, but more specifically, 25% of students are international, according to Fall 2014 statistics.

As is the case with multiple NYC institutions, Drama and Theatre is a very popular major at NYU. Others are Social Sciences; Business, Management, and Journalism; and Social Sciences.

NYU professors have one three Nobel Prizes since 2002; as of 2012, NYU had 29 professors who were members of the National Academy of Sciences.

It is hard to name a university in the United States with so many well-known and accomplished alumni. Students wishing to make a name for themselves and be in the public eye will gain great inspiration from NYU’s list of alumni. They include former Congressman Fiorella La Guardia; former Secretary of State Elihu Root; baseball Hall of Famer Hank Greenberg; and in the world of film and television, Woody Allen, Joel Coen, Angelina Jolie, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Vince Gilligan, and Bryce Dallas Howard, among dozens of other successful professionals. One of the many famous authors among NYU alumni is Saul Bellow.

5. Vassar College

Crouched an hour-and-a-half from New York, Vassar is a co-ed liberal arts school with an enrollment of 2,450. While some may know that Vassar was founded as a women’s college, it has been co-educational since 1969.

The campus is adorned by gorgeous, classical buildings, many with tall spires atop them. The library resembles a chapel, with its enormous stained-glass window and its twin balconies running each side of the study space.

Vassar offers a thorough liberal arts curriculum, with possible majors in Geography-Anthroplogy, Greek and Roman Studies, Russian Studies, Philosophy, Urban Studies, and many, many more. The student-to-faculty ratio is a low 8-1.

Vassar has 23 varsity teams competing in Division III athletics. Recently, it added a varsity team in Quiddich, the sport featured in the Harry Potter series of novels.

Getting into Vassar is no easy task: its current admission’s rate is just 24%; the SAT range is 1310-1470, and ACT 30-33.

New York State has colleges that will meet just about any niche. Some are adjacent to New York City, affording students internships and other opportunities in that city. Others are quite apart from The Big Apple, allowing students study among stately woods.

Those we’ve profiled here are academically rigorous and are home to students who were very successful in high school. Most of them are selective. Maintaining a good academic record and doing well on admissions tests are both very necessary to get into most or all of these notable New York schools.

Colleges In Washington

Washington State Schools

Students who are citizens of the state of Washington may attend many colleges and universities in neighboring and regional states for little more than the cost of in-state tuition as a result of a reciprocal agreement between the states in question. Students who remain in Washington, and those who come to the state for higher education, have many options. There are more than 30 community and two-year technical colleges, several of which are multi-campus institutions.

The six state-supported four-year colleges, most of which have multiple campuses, include the University of Washington, Washington State University, Eastern Washington University, Western Washington University, Central Washington University, and Evergreen State College.

Evergreen, the youngest of the group, is one of very few public colleges in the nation with a commitment to experimental liberal arts education.

The University of Washington, with campuses in Seattle, Bothwell, and Tacoma, admits close to 6 of 10 applicants and has a combined enrollment of close to 55,000 students (45,000 of whom attend classes on the main campus in Seattle). Next in size is Washington State University, a four campus institution with about 20,000 students enrolled at the main campus in Pullman and a total enrollment of approximately 30,000. Central, Eastern, and Western Washington are medium-sized universities, with enrollments of 11,000, 13,000, and 14,000 students respectively.

Perhaps the most distinctive post-secondary institution in the state is Western Governors University, a multi-state, publicly- supported, non-profit university offering a wide number of online bachelor’s and master’s degree programs for adult students.

Washington is home to several specialty institutions. Bastyr University, which has a campus in California in addition to the one in Kenmore, enrolls a little over 1,000 students in naturopathic medical programs. The Art Institute of Seattle and Cornish College of the Arts, both located in Seattle, offer programs in the fine arts. Pinchot University, founded in 2002 is a private graduate school offering degrees in sustainability, including an MBA degree in sustainable business.

The best known private colleges and universities in the state include Gonzaga University, and Whitman College, a small, selective liberal arts college.

Washington state students interested in ministerial careers may attend Faith Evangelical Lutheran Seminary (Tacoma) or Northwest Theological Seminary (Lynnwood).

Online Colleges In Washington State

The gorgeous state of Washington deserves high praise in many areas. In terms of offering online degrees and programs, the state is easily one of the best in the nation. Despite having a relatively low number of students enrolled in online degree programs (7.5%, according to a 2012 National Center for Education Statistics report), the state has a very large number of schools that offer online educational experiences and opportunities across all possible post-secondary options. These include a wide variety of certificate programs, Associate degree programs, Bachelor’s degree programs, Master’s degree programs and Doctoral degree programs. Prospective students will find institutions across the state offering these programs as well, from local community colleges up to nationally-ranked research universities.

Some of the best colleges in the state offer excellent online degree programs. Among the top-ranked online degree programs available are those delivered through Western Washington University, Northwest University, Heritage University, Washington State University and Saint Martin’s University. Western Washington University is well ranked in the region. According to the U.S. News and World Report, this school sits well at #21 among regional universities (West). Northwest University is also ranked well regionally at #17. Saint Martin’s University is likewise ranked well regionally at #46. The University of Washington, the state’s flagship public research university, is ranked well at #140 among national universities. Prospective students will find that these top ranked schools are unfortunately more expensive when compared to similarly ranked schools across the country. Heritage University, in Toppenish, Washington, is relatively expensive at around $18,000 a year annually. The least expensive on the list of top schools is Washington State University, which, though public, still comes in at over $12,000 a year for in-state tuition.

Washington University is not only a top-rated school, but also offers many of its highly ranked programs fully online. The school offers nine Bachelor’s degree programs through its online system. These programs include Accounting, Hospitality Business Management, Management, Management Information Systems, Criminal Justice, Human Development, Humanities, Social Sciences and Psychology. If you’re looking to tack on a Minor, the school also has an excellent variety in Minors available, including focuses in Aging, Business Economics, Film Studies and Political Science. Prospective students who are looking to attain their graduate degree will find that the University of Washington offers Master’s degrees in some common and some uncommon areas. As with many other schools offering online degrees, University of Washington offers programs in Criminal Justice, Special Education, and MBA programs. Unlike most other schools, prospective students will find such unique options as Strategic Communication, Engineering and Technology Management, Agriculture, Food Science Management, Plant Health Management, Electric Power Engineering and Molecular Biosciences. There are also a variety of certificate programs available in common and uncommon fields, such as Molecular Biosciences, Professional Science and Technology Writing, American Indian Studies and Organic Culture for undergraduates, and Bioethics and Sustainable Agriculture for graduate students.

Prospective students interested in online degrees will find that the northwestern state of Washington is among the top of the list for unique and interesting degree programs from top-rated colleges and universities.

Tennessee Colleges

There are nine four-year state universities in Tennessee, the most notable of which are the University of Memphis (formerly Memphis State University) and the University of Tennessee, located in Knoxville. The state universities also include Tennessee State University, a historically black college (HBCU). Enrollment in the state system runs from a low of under 8,000 at the University of Tennessee at Martin to a high of more than 27,000 at UT Knoxville (the flagship institution of the system).

Tennessee’s public post-secondary institutions also include 13 community colleges and more than 25 colleges of applied technologies. The state universities work very closely with the community colleges to make it relatively easy for community college students to transfer to them while retaining most (sometimes all) of the credit hours they have earned.

Depending on how you count them, there are 60-70 private post-secondary institutions in Tennessee, including for-profit colleges and universities. The most selective and notable among them is Vanderbilt University, a selective, well endowed university in Nashville which enjoys a strong national reputation. Rhodes College and University of the South are also considered selective.

Among other Tennessee private colleges are an HBCU (Fisk), several theological seminaries, a number of institutions with religious affiliations, a college of optometry, colleges specializing in the study of art, and a college (Tusculum) in which students take one course at a time, completing each in just a few weeks.

Online Colleges In Tennessee

Tennessee is one among many southern states with a large population and an active college atmosphere. However, like many states in the country, the public and private institutions in the state focus primarily on traditional schooling. As such, very few students in Tennessee access, or have access to, high quality online degree programs. However, the state continues to expand in this area. As of 2012, approximately 6% of the students in the state’s Title IV institutions were taking their degree programs fully online (according to a National Center for Education Statistics report). This number is extremely low in comparison to many other states, such as South Dakota, and Florida, which have over 20% of their students taking online degree programs online. Indeed, Tennessee lags behind most other southern states in this category as well.

Despite only recently increasing efforts to expand online degree programs, many of Tennessee’s schools (both public and private) have begun increasing options in this quickly-growing area of interest. The best colleges in the state to obtain such degrees are primarily located at private institutions in the state, with several public institutions offering online degrees for a much cheaper cost. Bryan College-Dayton, Johnson University, University of Memphis, Trevecca Nazarene University and Middle Tennessee State University are among the best in the state for online degree programs.

Prospective students interested in significant variety will find that the University of Memphis has a wide range of programs available at relatively low in-state tuition costs (around $8,500) and relatively high out-of-state tuition costs (over $23,000). The school ranks well on the U.S. News and World Report’s annual rankings, at #66 for Best Online MBA Programs and #70 for Best Online Graduate Nursing Programs. Through their online system, the UofM Online system provides an excellent variety of programs and individual courses. In-state students will pay only $100 per credit hour. Undergraduate students will find 15 degree programs available, including some hard-to-find degree programs for online students, such as Bachelor’s degree programs in Journalism, Finance-Real Estate, and African and African-American Studies.

East Tennessee State University, one of the public institutions in the state, equally has a very wide range of options for prospective students to consider. Individual courses are available through the system, as well as undergraduate and graduate coursework and programs as well. The state school allows for unique programs through the well-known Moodle learning management system. A mixture of fully-online and mostly-online degree programs are available. For those seeking 100% online undergraduate degrees, unique programs are available in Allied Health Leadership, Cardiopulmonary Science, Radiography, Interdisciplinary Studies, Professional Studies (Information Technology and Organizational Leadership), Dental Hygiene, Human Services, Nursing, English as a Second Language, Math Education and Special Education. The blended programs include those in Economics, English, Finance, Management, Marketing, Psychology and Sociology. The school specializes in fully-online graduate degree programs, including many hard-to-find degree programs, such as Epidemiology and Online Digital Marketing.

In all, there are 49 schools within the state that are both accredited (either regionally or nationally) and offering degree programs ranging from Associate’s degrees to Graduate degrees, with many of the universities offering graduate certificates in very unique areas of study.

South Carolina’s Schools – Overview

South Carolina, the Palmetto State, is home to more than 75 colleges, many of which are multi-campus institutions. Eight HBCU’s, 7 percent of the total, are found in South Carolina; Allen University, Benedict College, Claflin University, Clinton Junior College, Denmark Technical College, Morris College, South Carolina State University, and Voorhees College. The oldest and probably best known of the 8 HBCU’s listed above is South Carolina State University, which was founded in 1896, at a time when students in schools and colleges in South Carolina were segregated by race and educational opportunities for African-Americans were very limited.

Today, SCSU enrolls about 3,000 students. As it always has, SDSU still offers a good college education for nearly everyone who wants one by admitting about 95% of its applicants. Many other colleges in South Carolina, public and private, admit a high percentage of applicants.

The best known four-year public universities in the state are the University of South Carolina and Clemson University. Predictably, the two universities are fierce sports rivals. USC serves about 30,000 students. In addition to a wide variety of other graduate programs, the university includes a medical school, a law school, and a school of osteopathic medicine. Clemson has about 20,000 students in undergraduate and graduate degree programs. It offers 100 graduate programs. The Clemson architectural program has been ranked tenth best in the country.

South Carolina’s specialty colleges include several technical colleges, one with nearly 15,000 students, and Sherman College of Chiropractic.

Bob Jones University, Presbyterian College, and Furman University are probably the best known of the independent colleges and universities in the state.

More than a dozen South Carolina institutions offer online courses, online certificates, and/or online degree programs at the undergraduate and the graduate levels.

Online Colleges in South Carolina

South Carolina, much like its neighbor to the north, is not a particularly popular state for online educational degree programs. According to a 2012 National Center for Educational Statistics report, only 5.9% of students enrolled in Title IV schools were taking fully-online degree programs. This is behind even North Carolina, which also showed low numbers among students enrolled in such programs. In total, there are 41 colleges and universities in the state that offer some form of online degree program. A good portion of these are public institutions, while the majority of them are offered through private institutions, both not-for-profit and for-profit. The top five schools in the state for online degree programs are North Greenville University, University of South Carolina-Upstate, University of South Carolina-Columbia, Columbia College and Limestone College.

Prospective students will find that the most affordable colleges in the state are unfortunately on the high end regarding both tuition costs and per-credit costs. Limestone College, considered the most affordable program in the state, has the lowest annual tuition at under $9,500, but also has one of the highest per-credit costs ($1,170). The next four most affordable programs are mostly above $10,000 a year in tuition. These include Anderson University ($9,384 a year, $391 per-credit), University of South Carolina-Upstate ($10,068 a year), Coastal Carolina University ($10,140 a year) and Lander University ($10,418 a year). The majority of the most affordable online degree programs in the state are only offered through an annual tuition, and not on a per-credit basis.

Several of the institutions are not only highly ranked, but also provide a variety of options for undergraduate and graduate degrees. North Greenville University, a private Christian college, offers several graduate programs through its online system. These include a Master’s in Business Administration, a Master’s in Christian Ministry, and three Master’s in education: Education (general), Arts and Teaching and Music Education. The school is well ranked regionally at #27 among regional colleges, according to the U.S. News and World Report. The University of South Carolina-Columbia is not only ranked extremely well (#108 among national universities), it also provides many different Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees as well as a variety of different individual courses. Among the Bachelor’s degrees, prospective students will find those in Business Administration, Criminal Justice, Elementary Education, Human Services, Liberal Studies, Organizational Leadership and Nursing. Among the online Graduate degrees, students will find programs in Education, Nursing, Public Health and Information Technology.

Despite having higher costs most other states in the south, South Carolina’s colleges and universities are well-ranked and provide excellent educational value for the cost. Although most students in the state prefer to take their degree programs in a more traditional setting, there are many programs available that will provide students with an valuable learning experience and career-building degree.

One of the largest and most populous states in the country, New York should be a first choice for prospective students who like options. New York’s official state motto, Excelsior (or: “Ever Upward”) is one of the most educationally appropriate mottos of any state. This state of nearly 20 million citizens has one of the highest population densities in the country as well, at 416 people per square mile. However, many of the colleges in the state exist outside of the vast city of New York and out in the state’s serene countryside. Students interested in rural settings, suburban settings, and urban settings will be able to easily find options that best suit their needs. Likewise, those interested in traditional 4-year institutions, research universities, smaller, private liberal arts colleges, technical colleges, art schools, music schools and many other various forms of education will likely find exactly what they are looking for.

There are three categories for public colleges and universities in New York: The State University of New York (SUNY) system, the City University of New York (CUNY) system, and the federal service academies. There are two federal service academies in the state: The United States Merchant Marine Academy and the United States Military Academy. Both of these are only available to enlisted members of the armed forces. As there are only five U.S. service academies in the country, New York is unique in hosting two of these within its borders. The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy is focused on the training of marine engineers, navigators, ship administrators, personnel managers and experts in maritime and international law and customs, among other things. The U.S. Military Academy, more popularly known as “West Point”, has a long and honored history as the premier training grounds for U.S. service members, and in particular for the training of past, present and future generals of some notoriety. Notable alumni include Stonewall Jackson, Robert E. Lee, William Tecumseh Sherman, George Armstrong Custer, George S. Patton, Douglas MacArthur, as well as former presidents Ulysses S. Grant and Dwight D. Eisenhower.

The City University of New York is the oldest public university system in the state, as well as the largest urban university system in the country. The City University of New York is unique in that it receives public funding from both the city of New York, and the state of New York. This provides it with a relatively high operating budget of $3 billion. Over 516,000 students are enrolled in schools within the university system, making it one of the largest public university systems in the country (rivaled only by California’s public university and college systems). Established in 1847, The City University of New York is composed of 12 senior colleges, seven community colleges, and seven graduate schools. The oldest of these, City College of New York, was the original school in the CUNY system. Placed at #66, the City College of New York is ranked well for regional colleges by the U.S. News and World Report. While none of the colleges in the CUNY system are nationally ranked, most are ranked well regionally, well within the top 100 schools. Branch College, for example, comes in at #32; Hunter College is tied at #47 with Queens College. The City College of New York system boasts in-state tuition costs that are also well below the national average, and out-of-state tuition costs that are close to the national average for overall tuition costs, meaning even out-of-state students will pay much less than they might at other colleges across the country.

The State University System of New York maintains 64 separate campuses across the state of New York. Serving over 460,000 students (427,000 of which are undergraduates), the system operates on a very large $10.7 billion budget. There are four categories of institutions under the SUNY system: university centers/doctoral institutions (14 schools), university colleges (13 schools), technical colleges (7 schools) and community colleges (28 schools). Many of these

schools account for some of the oldest and most highly ranked colleges in the state. The oldest institution in the system is Postdam, which was established in 1816. Potsdam is placed reasonably at #92 for regional colleges. Other schools in the SUNY system are also well ranked regionally, and a few ranked nationally. The University of Albany is ranked #129 among national universities. SUNY-New Paltz is ranked at #24 regionally, and SUNY-Geneseo is ranked at #14. The SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry is ranked nationally at #89, along with Stony Brook University. Prospective students will find that the SUNY colleges are slightly more expensive than the CUNY colleges, but that they are also more likely to be ranked higher on national and regional collegiate rankings.

There are hundreds of private institutions within the state, many of which are among the best and oldest institutions in the country. The most highly ranked of these includes such colleges as Cornell University (tied for #15 among national universities), Columbia University (tied at #4 nationally), Cooper Union (tied at #2 regionally), Hamilton College (tied at #14 for national liberal arts colleges), New York University (tied at #32 nationally), Vassar College (tied at #12 for national liberal arts colleges) and the University of Rochester (#33 for national universities). Prospective students will find that the average tuition rates for these private colleges are exceptionally high. However, many of the colleges and universities in New York boast some of the highest graduation rates in the country, and some of the highest post-graduation salaries as well.

Online Degrees and Programs in New York

New York State and its post-secondary schools are far behind many other states in offering and supporting online degree programs. According to a 2012 National Center for Education Statistics report, only 6.1% of students enrolled in Title IV programs in the state were in fully-online programs. While this number has likely grown in the past few years, it is likely still well below many states, especially those that boast 20% or more regarding this same statistic. Thankfully, online degrees and programs in the state are mostly inexpensive, especially at the state’s SUNY colleges and universities.

The highest ranked online degree programs can be found primarily at the SUNY colleges. The top of the list includes SUNY-College of Technology at Delhi, SUNY-College of Technology at Alfred, SUNY-College at Plattsburgh, SUNY-College at Oswego and SUNY-College of Technology at Canton. Across the State University of New York system, there are around 400 online programs. At SUNY-College of Technology at Delhi, prospective students will find the #18 best online Bachelor’s program in the U.S., according to the U.S. News and World Report’s annual rankings. Students attending this school online will find such programs as Criminal Justice (Bachelor’s) and Nursing Education (Master’s). The number of online degrees available in the school are relatively small, at just five.

Open SUNY, the State University of New York, maintains an online degree program service. This service is available to all students enrolled in a SUNY institution. Online Bachelor’s, Master’s, Associate’s and certificates are all available through the service. Fifty-three bachelor’s degrees are available, including Criminal Justice, Electrical Engineering, Emergency Management, Education and International Trade and Marketing. Fifty-six Master’s degree programs are offered, which include Childhood Education, Library Science, Music Education and Work and Labor Policy. There are also over 200 Associate’s degree programs available and three Doctoral degrees.

Those unfamiliar with Missouri’s history may not know the interesting story behind the Corps of Discovery. A specially formed unit in the United States Army, it worked jointly with the Lewis and Clark expedition for 2 years, between 1804 and 1806. Their purpose? To explore the plants, animals and indigenous peoples of the region, and to examine the ways in which the Louisiana Purchase could benefit the country. The early understanding and subsequent settlement of Missouri’s territory is in part due to the Corp. It is no wonder that Missouri has continued in its long tradition of discovery and exploration. The educational scene in Missouri is one that is hard to match, and is certainly among the best in the Midwestern states.

Missouri is brimming with educational opportunities for prospective students, with 67 accredited colleges and universities across the state. This includes 13 public universities, 39 private colleges and thirteen community colleges.

Missouri’s 13 public universities include some of the top schools in the nation. Unlike most states, whose public universities are all part of the state’s official university system, Missouri has several independent public universities. This means that, while the schools operate independently, they do receive aid money from the state, thereby making them offer both in-state and out-of-state tuition options. The 4 universities in the state’s university system are: Missouri University of Science and Technology, University of Missouri, University of Missouri-Kansas City and the University of Missouri-St. Louis. These schools account for the majority of the state’s public institution enrollments. The other public universities in the state are: Harris-Stowe State University, Lincoln University, Missouri Southern State University, Missouri State University, Missouri Western State University, Northwest Missouri State University, Southeast Missouri State University, Truman State University and the University of Central Missouri.

Despite being added to as a state in 1821, most of Missouri’s colleges, to include the private and public institutions, were founded in the 1800s. The oldest private university in the state is Saint Louis University, which was founded in 1818. Among the public universities, the oldest is the University of Missouri, which saw its founding in 1839. All of this points toward a state that has always been big on post-secondary education, even during historical periods where most people were lucky to go beyond high school.

Several of the accredited, post-secondary institutions in the state are highly ranked in many different areas. Washington University in Saint Louis, for example, is tied for #27 with Pennsylvania State University and Ohio State University for Economics PhD programs. Truman State University ranks impressively among Midwestern universities with a solid #8 position. Meanwhile, the majority of the state’s private universities also rank high on the regional, Midwestern rankings. Washington University in St. Louis, aside from being an Economics powerhouse, also ranks nationally, at a very impressive #15 for national universities.

In-state and out-of-state tuition prices for public schools in Missouri are all well below the national average. Unfortunately, almost every private college or university in the state is well above the national average for annual costs. Cash-strapped prospective students interested in Missouri’s many educational institutions will likely need to ensure that they are funding their education through scholarships, grants and loans. Even the alternative, technical and career colleges charge rather hefty fees. The Chamberlain College of Nursing-Missouri, for example, requires just over $22,000 a year in annual costs. ITT Technical Institute-Earth City asks for around $21,000, and ITT Technical Institute-Arnold requires just under $24,000. These are not “steals” by any means. However, those who do wish to attend colleges and universities in

Missouri will be pleased to know that most students who attend theses schools find financial success afterward. The average salary after attending most of the colleges, including public, private and technical schools, is at or above the national average. Seeing as the national average is around $35,000, this is not necessarily wonderful news. However, most of the top public and private institutions post post-graduation salaries in the $40,000 to $60,000 range.

Online Degrees and Programs In Missouri

Prospective students interested in Missouri’s many public and private post-secondary schools will be happy to know that many schools offer some form of online education. This includes most of Missouri’s public institutions, which provide high quality online degrees and certificate programs for a fraction of the cost students will find at the private colleges. A 2012 report from the National Center for Educational Statistics found that 12.2% of Missouri’s public and privately enrolled students were taking classes completely online. Many of these students were taking classes through Missouri’s Mizzou Online network, which connects prospective and current students to over 80 different degree and certificate programs, all offered through the state’s highly ranked public universities.

Mizzou Online offers degrees in most academic fields that students may be interested in, and provides programs that range from Bachelor’s up to Doctorate degrees. There are currently only 9 Bachelor’s degrees available for students, but many more Master’s degrees (41 in all). There are 10 options for Doctoral degrees, although the majority of these are in Nursing. Many of these online programs do require some campus visits, so they cannot be true, 100% online courses. However, due to the nature of the programs (many of which are related to Nursing and Education), it is understanding that these require some physical presence at some point.

Outside of the state’s official university system, most of the other public colleges and many of the private colleges provide rigorous online degree programs. Missouri State University has its own program, Missouri State Online, which provides 11 Bachelor’s degree options, 2 certificate options, 2 Minors, and 13 Master’s degrees. While some of the Bachelor’s degrees may require physical presence at some point, the graduate degrees (and graduate certificates) can all be completed 100% online. As with most online degree programs, most of these programs are in technology, education, business administration and social sciences.

Students looking for excellent value will want to consider the following schools: William Woods University ($4,800 annual tuition), Lincoln University ($5,693 annual tuition), Missouri Southern State University ($5,958 annual tuition), Missouri Valley College ($6,000 annual tuition) and Columbia College ($6,240 annual tuition). Those more concerned with school ranking should consider these schools: Missouri Southern State University (which not only tops the list, but also offers great value), Missouri Valley College, Washington University in St. Louis, University of Missouri-St. Louis and William Woods University.

The Old Line State might be small in comparison to many of the other states, but it is large on education. As it divides the north from the south along the Mason-Dixon line, Maryland offers a unique mixture of both urban and rural college settings, all within a very competitive educational framework. The colleges that call this state home range from low to upper tier, and the affordability of most schools is right around the national average. Several colleges and universities in the state are significantly cheaper to attend than the national average. The state is also home to many community colleges, private colleges and public schools that, while significantly spread out, offer a very wide variety of degree programs, several of which are similarly matched in national and regional rankings.

The University System of Maryland is the state’s well-established governing body for the public institutions, of which there are 12. Eleven of these institutions are independent, degree-granting universities, all of which offer degrees ranging from Bachelor’s to terminal Doctoral degrees, with several offering post-Doctoral work and study as well. One of the institutions, The University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science, offers degrees in cooperation with a few of the colleges in the state’s public university system. Within this public college and university system, prospective students will find the following schools: Bowie State University, Coppin State University, Frostburg University, Salisbury University, Towson University, University of Maryland-Baltimore, University of Maryland-Baltimore County, University of Maryland-College Park, University of Maryland-Eastern Shore, and the University of Maryland University College.

Alongside the 12 members of the state’s public institutions are 14 private colleges and universities as well. Among these are some of the most renowned colleges in the country, including Loyola University, Johns Hopkins University, and the historic St. John’s College, which was founded in 1696. The majority of Maryland’s post-secondary schools were founded prior to 1950, with most having their founding date in the 1800s. This makes Maryland one of the states with some of the oldest institutions for higher learning in the country. Maryland also has more Historically Black Colleges and Universities than most other states, with a total of 4: Bowie State University, Coppin State University, Morgan State University and the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore. Unlike many HBCUs, the majority of Maryland’s HBCUs are members of the state’s public university system. This means that those schools cost much less and have much less rigorous acceptance policies for prospective students.

Maryland is home to several different forms of educational institutions beyond just the public and private colleges and universities. The state houses one of the premier music schools in the country, the Peabody Conservatory. The Peabody Conservatory comes in the top 10 rankings for all U.S. music conservatories, and is directly affiliated with Johns Hopkins University. Meanwhile, Maryland also has 16 community colleges (approximately one for each of the state’s counties) and is even home to the United States Naval Academy, the premier officer-training school for the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marines. For prospective students who desire a more technical focus to their education, there are two accredited schools to consider: TESST College of Technology in Beltsville, MD, and Lincoln College of Technology in Columbia, Maryland.

Maryland’s public and private institutions are highly ranked. While the state is not home to any Ivy-leagues like its northern neighbors, the flagship public school, University of Maryland, College Park, and the private Johns Hopkins University both rank nationally. In U.S. News and World Report’s college rankings, The University of Maryland, College Park comes in at #57 among national universities, and Johns Hopkins University comes in at #10.

Online Degrees and Programs In Maryland

Maryland is one of the few states that has a mostly-online college that is also a member institution of the state’s public university system. The University of Maryland, University College, while not the only online college in the state, is certainly the largest. It is also the primary provider of education to the U.S. military abroad, with several on-location colleges on military bases around the world. Students interested in online colleges in the state should start with UMUC first, before looking into other schools. UMUC offers an extremely wide range of degrees, ranging from Bachelor’s to Doctoral degrees. Students who choose to attend this school and live within the state will pay in-state tuition fees. Students who live outside of the state will pay out-of-state fees at competitive rates.

Maryland is also home to several other colleges and universities that offer online degree programs. And while the University of Maryland, University College is the state’s official “online” school, most of the other member institutions do offer some form of online classes that students can take. The top four schools in the state that offer online degrees are: Capital Technology University, University of Maryland-University College, Frostburg State University and the University of Baltimore. Three of these are University System of Maryland member institutions, and offer degrees at the fraction of the many other institutions.

In total, Maryland has 22 colleges and universities that offer online degree programs of various sorts. Most of these are public or not-for-profit private institutions. There are several for-profit private institutions: Strayer University, Kaplan University, Fortis Institute, ITT Technical Institute, University of Phoenix, Everest Institute and DeVry University. Due to the negative press recently received by for-profit institutions, prospective students should begin their search for online degrees with the public institutions. However, success can be found among the for-profit institutions, although these tend to come with much higher tuition and per-credit costs.

Prospective students should also note that while The University of Maryland, University College is a member of the University System of Maryland, and the premier online college in the state, it also has an extremely high acceptance rate: 100%. While this does not indicate that the college has lower standards or rigor, it does mean that the school accepts everyone who applies, making it much more susceptible to having low graduation rates. This is evidenced by the U.S. Department of Education’s college and university data, which shows a 4% graduation rate for the school. This should be taken with a grain of salt, however, as many students attend the school for individual coursework and not full degrees, and they may be getting counted as not having graduated. That said, the school’s tuition is well below the national average, and the average salary for students who have attended the school is above the national average, at just over $50,000.
