Historically black colleges and universities include community colleges, state-supported colleges and universities, and independent four-year colleges and universities, most of which are church affiliated.  Morehouse College is a male only college, while neighboring Spelman College enrolls women only.

Meharry Medical College, and Morehouse School of Medicine have proud histories of educating African-American MD’s, dentists, researchers, and other medical professionals.

All 100 plus HBCU’s were created prior to 1964 and all continue to share their original mission of providing African-Americans access to quality higher education and the upward mobility it makes possible. Not only do HBCU’s welcome students of other races, many actively recruit such students to create campus diversity.

Although some historically black colleges and universities currently face serious economic challenges, the group has a wonderful legacy.  In fact, they have educated more than fifty percent of the African-American professionals in the United States.
